We had a 6 year plan. We bought our land, we'd slowly start working on it and by the time Bob retired in 6 years we'd be ready to build. The timing changed when Bob was offered early retirement - and took it - no looking back! This worked out great for us in terms of time & money. We really want to move from our current home and live mortgage free with lower taxes. The plan now is to start building as soon as possible. We've got the house plan drawn, priced logs, have decided where we want the house on the lot and have started clearing the land. This blog will be a chronicle of our homesteading. From the first walks around our property to move in date, we hope to capture it all here in words, photos, & video. Friends & family keep tuned in - you may all be called on for expertise, a strong back, or maybe just to join us on the porch for a cup of coffee!

Long time since my last post

We've done a lot of work over the last couple of years and are moved in. We still need to finish the interior - flooring, trim, kitchen backsplash and range hood but we're in. We've done lots of work in the yard, Bob is building the garage and decking the porches. It's great being here in the woods. Enjoy the photos!

Interior work

We're putting up the v-groove and tongue & groove on the interior walls and I get to do more sanding. This is much easier than the log walls. All the electric boxes are in and wire is pulled. The attic space is finished and the stairs are in. We also put up some beams we harvested from trees on the land. Kitchen dummy wall is up. We've been making lots of progress. All it takes is time and money and we usually have one but not the other.

Latest Milestones

We've had a lot going on and I've been neglecting this blog. I'll try to bring everyone up to speed now.
In June we had the well dug - 260 ft , 30 gallons a minute of good, clear water- Yeah!

Today Ed came over and dug the trench for the water line to the house and started the septic system. That should be complete by the end of the week. So we'll have the last 2 big ticket items done and a lot less money in the bank.

Bob had Ed remove this boulder from the driveway. About 6' on the high side.

The pace has picked up

We've got the partition walls in thanks to Bernie. His expertise definitely sped up the process. Next we'll be pulling wires. We've got calls in for the well & septic and are waiting to get those scheduled. The mud this year was horrendous! We did put a small load of stone in the driveway but will need much more before next spring.

We've giving a hell of a deal on the house in Haverhill. Any takers?

It's starting to look like a house inside.

Bernie's a great friend - no matter what anyone says.

Off to a good start in 2016

Work on the cabin has finally started moving steadily once again. We're installing the heating system (forced hot air pellet furnace) and plumbing. We had to purchase our tub and shower units for the bathrooms to make sure we get the plumbing right. Since the house is on a slab it's a bit more difficult than if we had a basement. Laying the floor as we go. Bob's also creating some beams to use inside the house.

Update Fall 2015

We're still working on the cabin. Bob's started laying floor joists and last weekend we started the duct work for the heating system. Bob also completed the trim on the windows and doors on the outside of the house.

Working on the power

We've got the power lines running to the house. Everything is buried and we're waiting for Green Mountain Power to come and hook it up at the pole. It was a chore just getting this done this year with all the rain we've had. We're going to start working inside again soon.
