We had a 6 year plan. We bought our land, we'd slowly start working on it and by the time Bob retired in 6 years we'd be ready to build. The timing changed when Bob was offered early retirement - and took it - no looking back! This worked out great for us in terms of time & money. We really want to move from our current home and live mortgage free with lower taxes. The plan now is to start building as soon as possible. We've got the house plan drawn, priced logs, have decided where we want the house on the lot and have started clearing the land. This blog will be a chronicle of our homesteading. From the first walks around our property to move in date, we hope to capture it all here in words, photos, & video. Friends & family keep tuned in - you may all be called on for expertise, a strong back, or maybe just to join us on the porch for a cup of coffee!

A Typical Day for Bob

1. Bob gets up & has breakfast 8am
2. Goes over to take care of Ma
3. Takes the dump truck to the land to load a cord of wood - on the way the exhaust falls off
4. Gets the backhoe going, pulls up to the woodpile, loads the bucket with wood, the motor seizes on the hoe
5. Loads the cord of wood into the dump truck - way over his head - by hand
6. Pulls the backhoe out of the way with the bulldozer - it overheats - the waterpump goes
7. Goes home, drops the dump truck and goes to Napa for parts to fix the exhaust
8. Fixes the exhaust on the dump and the manifolds were leaking
9. Fixes the manifolds
10.Goes over to take care of ma
11. Has dinner
12. Sits down at 8:30 pm

Ain't retirement great!

16 courses to go!

Sillplate

Squaring the end

Cutting the dovetail

Dovetail

Dovetail joint

Insulation in the joint

2 courses

This past weekend we built the sillplate and laid our first 2 courses of logs. The logs range in length from 8 to 20+ feet. We're trying to use the 20 footers down low, but are finding it may be easier to cut those to shorter lengths. This weekend was hot - in the 90's and humid. What a weekend to start laying logs! The house is 28' x 58' and there will be 18 courses of logs giving us approximately 8' ceilings. We hope to have the walls up, windows & doors in and roof on by snow. Anyone wishing to learn, sweat, or get a workout is welcome to join us any weekend!

Weekend work

This weekend we put in the drain pipe. The backhoe was being temperamental, but once Bob finally got it going we dug the trench and got the pipe in at the right grade. It's only the beginning!
