We had a 6 year plan. We bought our land, we'd slowly start working on it and by the time Bob retired in 6 years we'd be ready to build. The timing changed when Bob was offered early retirement - and took it - no looking back! This worked out great for us in terms of time & money. We really want to move from our current home and live mortgage free with lower taxes. The plan now is to start building as soon as possible. We've got the house plan drawn, priced logs, have decided where we want the house on the lot and have started clearing the land. This blog will be a chronicle of our homesteading. From the first walks around our property to move in date, we hope to capture it all here in words, photos, & video. Friends & family keep tuned in - you may all be called on for expertise, a strong back, or maybe just to join us on the porch for a cup of coffee!

Cleaned & first coat of sealer on

A couple of weekends ago while I was vacuuming, Bob got the furnace room floor in.  Since then we finished cleaning inside and yesterday got the first coat of sealer on the inside log walls. We also moved the pellet furnace in. Plan for next weekend is to sand, spray the second coat of sealer and we'll be pretty much done until after Bob's surgery. He's going to get new hips. Finally.

Took a day off to take a last motorcycle ride up to northern NH - got some nice foliage photos.

Another milestone reached this weekend

We finally finished sanding the inside log walls. We started on August 1, 2013. So just over a year to complete the sanding - but in real time it was only weekends over a 9 month period. In actual hours it was around 250. Looks great. Now we clean and then seal.

The bottom 2 logs are what the walls were like before sanding. The floor will be above those 2 logs.

Blowing the sanding dust off of everything. It'll take us a weekend to clean before we can seal the logs.

Sanding and more sanding...

I thought I'd post a few photos of the sanding process. We finally found a mask that has a vent/filter so my glasses don't fog up. We've taken the first 2 weeks of July off - need to give ourselves a break. We'll be back at it next weekend.

Catching up...

It's been awhile since I last posted so I've got to get things up to date. All the windows are in. We just completed closing in the porch overhang. We're still sanding but we're past the halfway point now. Bob has been having issues with the backhoe so we still aren't ready to run the power from the pole to the house - he needs to finish the trench. Hopefully that'll happen in the next few weeks.

No buyers yet for the Haverhill house. I guess the market is still pretty slow. We've transplanted more flowers and lilacs - we won't have to purchase anything once we move in. Anyway - enjoy the photos!

We finally got a chance to start working on the cabin again. This winter has seemed never ending. It has been the coldest winter in many moons. Two weekends ago, before the ground transformed to the muddy mess it is now, we managed to install 3 windows. We are anxious to get the remainder installed. Doors are after the windows, then power to the house.
