We had a 6 year plan. We bought our land, we'd slowly start working on it and by the time Bob retired in 6 years we'd be ready to build. The timing changed when Bob was offered early retirement - and took it - no looking back! This worked out great for us in terms of time & money. We really want to move from our current home and live mortgage free with lower taxes. The plan now is to start building as soon as possible. We've got the house plan drawn, priced logs, have decided where we want the house on the lot and have started clearing the land. This blog will be a chronicle of our homesteading. From the first walks around our property to move in date, we hope to capture it all here in words, photos, & video. Friends & family keep tuned in - you may all be called on for expertise, a strong back, or maybe just to join us on the porch for a cup of coffee!

Getting Grade

Thanks Ed!

Thanks Bernie!
Fill, fill, and still more fill! 240 yards of fill. We got an expert over to help grade and he got out of his truck and said "You don't have enough fill".  You can't spread what you don't have. Today we got 4 more loads. Bob took some grades. Getting closer to pouring that slab. A few weeks behind schedule for the slab, but ahead on log delivery.

Hey it's bike week. All work and no play...

Offloading logs

Delivery was well worth the money we paid. The guys were awesome. I can't imagine doing all of this without the equipment.

Log Delivery

We met the guys delivering the logs at P&H Truckstop
They followed us the 3 miles to our property

Coming up our long driveway
Heading for the site

That's 3300 linear feet of logs!

Monday the logs were delivered! Yeah! We've had a busy 3 days at the land and things are moving forward quickly at the moment. Money is going quickly too. We got a good deal on the logs from a guy in Rochester, Vermont. They were already peeled and bleached. So we paid a little more than anticipated for the logs, but are saving time because we don't have to peel them. Still much less expensive than buying them from a cabin company. No peeling party Sheila!

Site Prep & Fill Delivery

Bob's got the site almost prepped. Saturday we had fill delivered. We got 4 loads - 56 yards so far. The ground is really rocky so there's no digging down, we have to build up. We'll probably need 3-4 more loads before we can pour the slab.

A New Toy!

Bob got some new equipment - he bought a small bulldozer. It's already payed for itself in terms of the work we've accomplished with it and when we're through we can sell it and recoup the money - not so when you hire someone to do the work for you. Check it out - I even get to drive it!
